How do I optimize my computer for video sharing?

Although GoToMeeting does not officially support sharing video, many customers want to share video playing on their computer during an online screen-sharing session. This guide describes the best settings for sharing video during a presentation.

You can also try our Video Sharing (Labs) feature instead of using the setup described below!

Bandwidth Recommendations

In order to best share video, we recommend that attendees as well as organizers join the meeting session from a high-speed, wired connection. Furthermore, you should be aware of the bandwidth limitations on your internet connection. For best results in either the attendee or organizer role, we recommend closing all non-essential applications, such as email, instant messaging and internet browsers.

Setting Up Your Computer

As an organizer, you need two computers to share video during a meeting, webinar or training, one to share the video and the other to connect to the audio portion of the presentation.

These changes must be made to Windows Media Player in order for GoToMeeting to stream video:

Note: Without making these changes, video appears as a black box. These changes must be made for GoToMeeting streaming video to function properly.

1. Open Settings.

2. Under Tools, select OptionsPerformance > Advanced.

3. Ensure that under Video Acceleration, "Use Overlays" is unchecked and "Use High-Quality Mode" is selected. Unless "Use Overlays" is unchecked, video appears as a black box to attendees.

4. Click OK.

Take the following steps to set up your PC and GoToMeeting to stream video:

1. On your primary PC, the one you use to share video, navigate to the Audio pane and select Use Mic & Speakers.

2. On your secondary PC, ensure that you are also set as an organizer, navigate to the Audio pane and select Use Telephone. Essentially, you’re using this PC to supply yourself a telephone number with which to dial into the audio portion of the presentation.

From this point forward, all instructions apply only to the primary PC:

3. Locate the audio jacks for both audio input and output on the back of your computer.

4. Run a 3.5mm audio cable between the two in order to make your audio output reroute back into the computer, enabling your attendees to hear as well as see your videos.

5. In the Audio pane, click Audio Setup, which opens your preferences window.

6. Click the Microphone Setup drop-down and select Audio Input.

7. Click the Speakers Setup drop-down and select Audio output.

8. Click OK.

Tips & Tricks

  • Playing a video file that you have on your computer works much better than streaming video from a website.

  • Due to the high-bandwidth nature of GoToMeeting sessions, there is a limit to the quality of video transmission to your attendees. The more updates on the screen, the choppier the video appears. The video itself, unless rebroadcasting a recorded webinar, typically looks choppy and this is unavoidable
    • GoToMeeting capture updates that occur on your screen, and sends those changes to attendees. If you move your mouse from one corner of the screen to another, only a small amount of information is being updated – where the cursor was, and where it goes. If you do the same thing with a window that takes up ½ of your screen, it will look choppy to attendees because it requires a much larger data transfer.
    • When sharing video, a headshot of someone talking will look much smoother than a video of someone dancing. The amount of activity and updates required to share a fast moving object is more than GoToMeeting is designed to stream.
