Selecting a Meeting Recording Format (PC)

GoToMeeting, GoToWebinar and GoToTraining allows you to select any of the following recording formats: GoToMeeting format and Windows Media Player File format on PCs, and MPEG4 (.MP4) files on Macs. See the Recording FAQs for additional information.

GoToMeeting Format

By default, GoToMeeting, GoToWebinar and GoToTraining is configured to use a proprietary encoding format that is identified by the name G2M2 for lossless video compression and best quality; therefore, the G2M2 decoder (CODEC) is required for playback. Keep in mind the following points when using the GoToMeeting format:

  • Meeting recordings are ready for viewing with Windows Media Player 9 or higher, immediately after leaving or ending a meeting.
  • To play the meeting recording, viewers must have GoToMeeting/GoToWebinar or the G2M2 video codec installed on their computer.
  • The G2M2 video codec is available to download for free at: http://www.gotomeeting.com/codec.
  • Mac users are unable to view recordings in the GoToMeeting Format.
Windows Media Player File Format (PC)

Selecting the "Convert to Windows Media Player" file will allow you to distribute your meeting recording without requiring recipients to have GoToMeeting/GoToWebinar or the G2M2 video codec installed on their computers. However, keep in mind the following points:

  • Allow time for the conversion to take place. The time needed is dependant upon video content, CPU speed and amount of memory available.
  • It may be impossible to use GoToMeeting/GoToWebinar during the time that you are converting a meeting recording to a Windows Media Player format because your computer is busy converting the video (may result in choppy screen sharing). Note that the conversion process begins immediately after you end or leave a meeting.

Note: You must have at least 500 MB of space on the destination drive to record a meeting or Webinar. If you have less than 500 MB of available space, a warning is displayed before recording begins. If space drops to 100 MB, recording will be automatically stopped and you will receive a warning message. If you have selected to convert your recording to Windows Media format, you will need 1 GB (twice as much space). The Remaining field in the Recording pane refers to the amount of space available for recording that is listed in the Recording Preferences Save In field.

Also, to select the file format for your recording, go to the Recording tab in your GoToMeeting/GoToWebinar preferences. Regardless of the file format that you choose, recipients will need Windows Media Player 9 or higher to view the recording. Recordings can only be viewed after you leave or end a meeting. Meeting recordings viewed before the end of a meeting will show incomplete images.

MP4 Format (Mac)

After converting recorded sessions on Macs, recordings are automatically saved as .MP4 files using h.264 compression. Anyone can view the recording without additional conversions.
